Strong Counsel from Strong Council?
Seeking advice from those we trust is a great way to consider alternative perspectives to our experiences and internal dialogue. However, who is in the COUNCIL that we seek COUNSEL from can have a great impact on the outcome of that advice. Below are some questions to consider:
-Who do you seek advice from (who is your council?)?
-How do you pick those people?
-What awareness do you have of their values, biases, beliefs, judgments, and experiences…and the alignments of these with your own?
-How many different people do you seek counsel from? Do you change these people as your life changes?
-How do you decide what advice to follow? How might your responses to these questions be impacting your life and the choices you make?
-Are you best served with a wide circle of counsel or small?
My personal beliefs:
-I keep a very small council.
-I seek alignment in value from those in my council.
-I am selective about what I share and to whom.
-I aim never to follow counsel blindly. I check in to make sure the advice resonates with me.
-I remember that, ultimately, I am responsible for the consequences of my actions.
